Of Feather and Bone
The great blue heron rises, a spell drawn from still water — guardian of the forgotten memories only music can recall.
An interdisciplinary dance in collaboration with Musician Didi Wyss.
This piece began to gestate during my Emergent Artist Residency at Centrum this past October. The story is about my encounter with a heron on the Salish Sea that evolved into a reflective piece on what I have inherited as a second generation immigrant. Through song, dance and ritual I play characters to embody their signature. With a strong presence of Saturnial energy, the gold kurta the character Elder wears was altered by my grandmother Nasra & the heron’s wings and cardamom shirt I designed and sewed. Woven into the soundscapes are piano compositions of mine, alongside recordings of my dad’s voice. The live song is an original composition of mine, translated from Spanish to Urdu with the help of my Phupho and set to a new melody, reworked in collaboration with sound artist Didi Wyss.

is an interdisciplinary solo performance expressed through the body & voice. This creation is rooted in dialogue with receiving knowledge through dreaming, contemplating her lineage of diasporic movement from pakistan & ushering a resurgence of self-identification.
